What We Do

Our oceans are vast, but are not immune to human influence. We have already altered or destroyed marine ecosystems and driven species into the brink of extinction.

Our Solutions

Community Conservation

Experience from around the world shows that managing fisheries and marine resources works best when responsibility is placed in the hands of local communities. This is particularly true in low-income countries, where there is often limited capacity and infrastructure for fisheries management and conservation. Marine protected  areas of ocean managed by coastal communities have been proven to be highly effective in reducing local conflicts over fisheries, conserving marine biodiversity, and improving catches. We work with local communities to support them in establishing sustainable systems for managing marine resources.

Identifying Vulnerable Ecosystems

Despite our past discoveries related to our oceans, 95% is still yet to be explored. Save Our Oceans works to ensure that are educated enough to avoid harming marine ecosystems. We focus on helping decision makers because we know that most people know less about our oceans than land. We have a broad understanding of what is needed to maintain marine diversity and sustainable productivity.

Coral Conservation

Coral reefs are spectacular, diverse ecosystems that are home to thousands of different species. Coral reefs have been termed “the rainforests of the sea” because they support a vast abundance and diversity of different plants and animals, more species than any other marine ecosystem, with more still being discovered. Coral reefs are threatened by fishing, climate change and development, and are having trouble all around the world. With sufficient effort and political will, most of the direct impacts to coral reefs can be alleviated.  We works to protect coral reef ecosystems so that they will be around for generations to come.

Community Education

We support our partner communities to develop the skills they need to manage their marine resources sustainably. From school scholarships and environmental education through to marine science courses, our team works tirelessly to deliver training at all levels.
